Researching into a typical synopsis in a thriller genre

Our synopsis of the film we are making;

Our film is about a young girl at the age of 10 and her father 42.
In the part of the film we are filming you (the audience) never find out the name of the little girl, so to help you understand the name of her is Isobella. Now Isobella is to be seen as living an ordinary life like any other 10 year old apart from, she is not.
Her father, who also doesn’t have a name in the first part either, Mark was once in the army as a young boy. He continued for as long as he could but stopped at the age of 32.
Mark used to have a wife while in the army, and the three of them made one happy family.  But things all changed for them when Mark was diagnosed with severe shellshock. His wife Anna couldn’t cope and left Mark with Isobella with him. She now lives somewhere in America with her new husband and family. Mark and Isobella hadn’t heard from her since and that was over 15 years ago.
The walk out of Anna distressed Mark even more and he turned sick and twisted keeping his only daughter in a dog cage at the end of his garden, only feeding her dog food and the occasional treat such as his leftovers, and that was on a good day. This goes on for years at a time and is the only life Isobella knows.
Towards the middle of the film the next door neighbours of the big house Mark lives in arise a concern to the police of screams being heard from his back garden, nothing really comes of it and is dropped.
Out of surprise Marks wife Anna comes back into the picture and comes to visit her daughter, only to find out the terror of her daughter living the life she does.

Conventions of a thriller genre

The thriller genre is contained in wide range of films and is easy to identify the characteristics of a thriller. The aim of a thriller is to keep the audience excited and keep them on the edge of their seats. The popular sub-genres used in thrillers are horror and psychological. The key elements used in thrillers are characters, plot and theme. In thrillers the main character usually comes across death, the plot is usually focused on mystery that needs to be solved or the characters are on a long-term quest that lasts throughout the movie. Thrillers are also filmed from the main’s character point of view so it’s easier for the audience to follow and understand the character’s story. Thrillers are normally stories that the audience can relate to, but are just exaggerated a bit more to make the story more interesting. There’s also a villain that is corrupting the world in some way and a hero that serves justice.
